The alert issued at 3 p.m. Sunday warned of rainfall rates of over 25 millimetres per hour or higher and total rainfall amounts of up to 70 millimetres.
Heavy downpours can trigger flash floods and water pooling on roads, the alert said. People in the area are warned not to drive through water on the roads.
It said strong wind gusts can toss loose objects.
The alert said residents must be prepared to call 911 if they need to evacuate.
It said residents should be prepared to take pets, important documents, medication, food and emergency supplies with them should they need to evacuate.
As of 5:30 p.m., Environment Canada has also issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Colchester, Hants and Pictou counties.
A cluster of thunderstorms is travelling eastward at 50 km/h, the agency said.
The warnings say hail of two centimetres or more and wind gusts up to 90 km/h are possible.
