Nova Scotia RCMP say a baby fox they rescued last month who appeared to be injured is on the mend.
On April 23 at about 1:30 a.m., the RCMP say an officer spotted a family of foxes darting through traffic “in a panicked dance.”
In a Facebook post on Friday recounting the incident, police said the officer was on a routine patrol at the time and observed “one pup struggled significantly, her hind legs failing as she tried to navigate the road.”
“Realizing the immediate danger to both the animals and passing motorists, the officer activated their emergency lights, creating a shield for the family of foxes,” the post stated.
The post goes on to say a second officer arrived and “secured the pained pup.”
They took the young fox to Hope for Wildfire, an animal refuge, for further care.
“The small survivor is on the mend, showing steady progress each day,” the post continued.
Police said this incident is a reminder that some extra caution at dusk and dawn “goes a long way in protecting our wildlife that we often find using the roadways too.”
