Five residents of Eskasoni First Nation in Cape Breton have been charged with attempted murder after a man received serious injuries in an assault earlier this month.
Two men, 20 and 18, appeared Monday in Sydney provincial court and three youths of undisclosed ages were scheduled to appear Tuesday, an RCMP news release said.
Police found a 39-year-old man lying on the roadway near the intersection of Mickeys Lane and Shore Road in Eskasoni, N.S., just after midnight on July 4.
Staff Sgt. Ian Campbell, the Eskasoni RCMP detachment commander, said the man remains in hospital in very serious condition.
Police said he had been walking home when he became involved in an altercation with a number of people known to him.
“It was on the street in a residential area and a large group of people descended upon the victim and there was multiple strikes to different parts of his body,” Campbell said.
Last week, RCMP appealed to the public for information and video footage that could help in the investigation.
After announcing the arrests this week, Campbell said even though charges have been laid, the case is not finished.
“It was quite a large, complex investigation with a lot of possible witnesses, neighbourhood inquiries [and] surveillance footage, so the investigation is still ongoing at this time,” he said.
