Moving to Japan from Nova Scotia? It’s now easier to obtain a Japanese driver’s licence under a new agreement between the country and Nova Scotia.
The reciprocal agreement, which came into effect July 14, waives written and road tests for Nova Scotians who exchange their valid driver’s licence for a Japanese licence.
People from Japan who come to the province to live, work or study will be granted the same treatment, said provincial spokesperson Gary Andrea in an email.
“Applicants must still meet residency, verification of identity, graduated driver licensing program, driver licence translations and vision screening requirements,” the email said.
Drivers should still be prepared to provide ID and pay a fee.
Testing is also mandatory for certain categories, such as commercial licence classes.
Nova Scotia already holds similar agreements with Belgium, the U.K., Taiwan, South Korea, Isle of Man, Austria and Germany.
