Residents and the owner of a business are grappling with the sudden loss of their homes and belongings after a fire on Gaston Road in Dartmouth, N.S., on Monday evening destroyed three connected buildings.
The business, Namaste Indian Grocery, looks intact from the front. But owner Amal Dev said there is little left inside. He said his wife was at the business when the fire began and called him.
“Nobody slept last night. Nobody knows what to do because this is the first time happening for us,” Dev said in an interview Tuesday.

“I don’t know how long the procedure is going to take. They won’t let us in … they said the building is not in good condition.”
On Monday, fire officials estimated there were at least five or six residential units in the three connected buildings. No one was injured, and officials said they are still investigating the cause of the fire.
Dev said he was able to go into the building briefly on Monday and that everything was under water.
While he has insurance, Dev said he’s not sure of his next steps. He said he’s still in shock and concerned about his employees.
“I don’t think we can make it up here again because it will take a long time. So we will have to find a good spot. A lot of people will know this location. It’s been six years,” Dev said.
Ankush Raiqwar, a tenant, said he was at work when he got a call about the fire.

“On the call, I could hear the sirens. Then I just rushed to here … I saw many fire vehicles and they were drilling holes in the roof on top of my room,” Raiqwar said.
“I was so sad because all of my stuff, everything, all the documents were there.”
Raiqwar, who recently moved to Nova Scotia from New Brunswick, said his manager got him a hotel room for the night. He said he was still wearing the clothes he had on Monday.
“I’m still in shock,” he said.
