Barometric Pressure
| Falling Pressure (The Best Time to Fish): As a low-pressure front moves in, fish sense the weather changing and feed aggressively to stock up before conditions get tough. Capitalize on aggressive fish by using fast-moving baits (like spinnerbaits or crankbaits) and covering lots of water.
Low Pressure (Post-Front): Once the storm hits, swim bladder expansion makes fish uncomfortable. They often retreat to the safety of deep water and hold tight to structure, resulting in a slower bite. Look for shallower hiding spots where fish move to feed comfortably. Rising Pressure: As the high-pressure system clears the air, the pressure compresses their swim bladder, requiring them to use more energy to hold their depth. The bite is typically tough, and fish stay glued to the bottom. Slow down. Use smaller baits, such as jigs or Ned rigs, and fish them deliberately and close to bottom cover or structure. During high pressure, fish deeper than usual. Stable Pressure: Long stretches of stable weather—whether high or low—allow fish to acclimate, resulting in predictable, reliable feeding patterns. |
